Successful novelist and playboy Owen Waterbury hires aspiring writer Stephanie 'Steve' Gaylord as his secretary; a dream come true for Steve who admires Owen and his work. Steve soon discovers that self-absorbed Owen has been through a succession of secretaries who quit when they are fed up with his behavior. He is constantly in debt and cannot begin writing a novel contract that will pay his bills, including a lucrative advance from his publisher. Steve and Owen end up getting married, and Steve perseveres until the novel, based on events in Steve's life and mentioning a character based on his publisher shown in an unflattering light, is refused publication.
Owen claims he can't have a wife and a secretary, so he fires his wife and goes back to his old ways, hiring an admired and attractive woman like himself to be his secretary. Meanwhile Steve takes Owen's rejected manuscript to his former partner, Charles Harris, who is a top publisher. Harris, who now employs Elsie, Owen's former secretary before Steve, also agrees to read Steve's manuscript.
Harris finds Owen's manuscript interesting but ordinary, but believes Steve's manuscript is not only worthy of publication, but also a serious candidate for literary awards. Steve initially refuses publication because it hurt Owen's fragile ego, but soon changes his mind due to the philandering. Steve becomes a best-selling author, causing Owen extreme annoyance. He hires an attractive male secretary, whereupon Owen snaps and insists he'll be his secretary. Steve tells Owen a book based on their life. They end up getting back together.
