It's all a ploy however as she pretends to reach for the agent's crotch but instead snatches away the head agent's bright yellow walkie-talkie and desperately turns it on and tries to summon help. It only takes the tall and powerful Mr. X a few seconds to get back inside of the room, snatch away the walkie-talkie from Jean, and smash it to pieces with his shoe. Jean gets the beating of her life, but in the fracas she manages to palm both of the tiny batteries inside the enemy's walkie-talkie without anyone noticing... batteries that are compatible with the tiny radio transmitter hidden on her costume! After being beaten up, Jean wearily installs the batteries in her belt buckle and manages to establish contact with Kitty Pryde, one of the newest members of the Hex-Men! Kitty tells Jean that the team has been looking for her for days, but right now the Hex-Men are on a mission in Russia and won't be back for days. Kitty offers to free Jean herself but Jean warns Shadowcat *not* to come to her location or she'll be caught as well. Both women agree to activate Jean's homing beacon and the other Hex-Men will rescue her after they return from Leningrad.

To that end, Jean undergoes the worst possible beatdown and brutalization yet devised, something that tears at the primal core of her being, making her angrier and angrier... but will it be enough to make her angry enough to release the Phoenix deep inside her?
