Dr. Tilly McReese is an extremely able young scientist, but is a touch naïve and doesn't realize how irresistible she is to men. Tilly works for a small high-tech start-up, where she has invented a special synthetic compound that is environmentally safe, strong as steel and can take the form and texture of any other material, soft or hard.

But, despite believing sufficient funds were in the budget to launch the product, she found they had significantly less than expected. Tilly was blamed by the Board for an overspend, which she cannot fathom. She was told to work with her business development colleague, Eric Holman, to attract new financing urgently if she wants to keep her job.

Prior to her present job, Tilly studied hard at university to achieve the necessary qualifications. Like many students she waitressed and worked bars. At times, she held two or three part-time jobs just to make ends meet. Overall, she had no problems in her student life, but a monied guy called Jon Woods was someone she tried to forget. That was because she got into financial difficulties at one stage. Out of the blue, Jon patted her bottom in public and made an indecent proposal: model for him nude and he'd give her $100. During that encounter, Tilly cringed with embarrassment and told Jon he was a shameful and disgusting pervert and shunned him thereafter.

Carmen is Eric's PA. She comes from a middle-class family. Carmen is not a feminist but wants to hit the top in business and wears smart business suits and dresses. She worked hard and managed to get a business qualification at college and this the first company she has worked at. She applied for a junior executive job, but Eric wanted her as his PA instead and the executive job went to a young man. He has drawn Carmen into his plans by getting her to work with Tilly on the finances to implicate her as well. Eric has turned the screw and informed Carmen on what he plans to do to Tilly in the presentation. She is very uncomfortable and doesn't trust him but Eric has threatened her over her work on the finances. Carmen has no idea he plans to insert her (in a manner of speaking) into the presentation as well.

Eric Holman is Tilly's subordinate colleague, who works on the promotional side of the synthetic compound venture. He picked up a business qualification at school and, unknown to Tilly, bought a degree in business studies to lend validity to his money-making ventures. He is more interested in the science of making money than the applied science Tilly is working on.

Eric, to put it bluntly, is a bit of a greedy git. He is unfeeling and will, blackmail and bully to get what he wants. He doesn't care about the consequences for others. Yet, Tilly's synthetic invention has so much money-making potential, Eric has been charming to her because he wants a cut of her potential revenues and doesn't want to frighten her off.

But Eric has a corrupt secret. He enjoys gambling, but is totally useless at it. To fund his expensive habit, he doctored the project's books to make it seem as if Tilly had been overspending. Unknown to Tilly, he set up a secret bank account in her name, where he syphoned off funds to!

Jon Woods is a man that comes from a well-off family. Jon doesn't forget any perceived slight. After College, he set up his own Venture Capital company and has done very well. It is one of the state's top firms. He also has a private side-line owning strip clubs, gambling dens and places of ill repute for fun. Tilly's public shunning back at college rankled him and he always hoped he'd get even with her. Over a poker match he meets Holman, who loses badly. To try and wriggle out of his debt, Holman tells Jon of the synthetic compound project and offers him an opportunity to invest. Jon agrees to examine the possibility of providing financing and delves into the project's financing and key staff.
