In 1838 the young Hutter works in a real estate agency.
One morning his principal Knock receives a request from Transylvania from Count Orlok, eager to take a home in the village. The matchmaker decides to send Hutter to the Count to sign the deeds of sale, despite the fact that the journey to the Carpathians is not without its dangers. Hutter sets out on a journey, heedless of his wife Ellen's dark forebodings, leaving her in the care of her friend Harding and her step-sister until her return.
Approaching his goal, Hutter comes into contact with the superstitions of the local people, convinced that the count's castle is possessed by dark. Particularly feared and mythologized is the presence of Nosferatu, a bloodthirsty vampire who feeds on the of his victims and rests in coffins filled with earth contaminated by the black plague.
Finally Hutter reaches his client, who is immediately courteous but somewhat sinister. A few days are enough for him to realize that the count embodies all the characteristics of the infamous Nosferatu, of which he himself is an forgetful victim during the nights at the castle. Hutter ends up locked up in his room, from which he can see the Earl sending off a load of earth-filled coffins, presumably headed for Wisborg.
The count himself sets out on a journey inside one of the coffins. Once he escapes from the castle, Hutter returns to his hometown to hug his wife, who in the meantime had been troubled by constant night omens. The curse of Nosferatu, however, begins to make the health of the protagonist more and more fragile.
Meanwhile, its owner Knock had begun to show signs of madness, ending up locked up in a cell. He was a victim of Count Orlok's will from the very beginning. After a long voyage by sea during which he exterminates the entire crew, he takes possession of his new home, located opposite Hutter's, from which he scrutinizes his new victim at night: Ellen.
Together with the count, the plague epidemic also arrives in Wisborg, which claims victims for which the population looks for the scapegoat in Knock (in the meantime escaped), accusing him of being an infector. Ellen learns that the only way to defeat the earl and her epidemic of him is to expose him to the light of the sun, and to achieve this she will sacrifice himself by quenching her until late dawn.
Together with Count Orlok, the terrible epidemic and the curse that had struck Hutter will also vanish.
